Efficient LED-lighting for your automotive workshop

Diverse activities are performed in automotive workshops making high demands on quality of lighting. The workshop itself, interior and exterior areas, varnishing or painting halls, offices and sanitary facilities – all these areas need to be equipped with convenient light fulfilling not only individual but also legal requirements. We would like to give some information to you on these requirements and explain how adequate lighting can easily be planned and installed.

Legal requirements for the illumination of your car workshop

The two most relevant operating figures stipulated by law are the terms “lux” for light intensity and “CRI” which is the color rendering index.

The light intensity defines the amount of light arriving to the ground. For garages these requirements vary according to the different areas of application.

300 Lux are sufficient for storage areas and areas of workshop halls where general car services, repair works or car inspection is executed.

For more delicate work at workbenches illumination should have at least 500 lux.

Precision work but also varnishing or painting require a light intensity of 750 lux.

 

The color rending index defines the quality feature of artificial light compared with natural light. Natural light has an index of 100 lux.

For car workshops it is of huge importance to choose light having a color rendering index as natural as possible. Tiny defects as dents or defects in paint work must be detected and properly repaired. For such application, a CRI of ≥80 is adequate.

 

Individual requirements for illumination of your car workshop

Investment for new lighting of your car workshop should be worth the trouble. A good lighting solution should concentrate on several important points:

Long life cycle

A considerable improvement of life cycle and maintenance intervals is especially achieved by a change from conventional lighting to LED-lighting. Contrary to conventional fluorescent or halogen lamps, LED can operate until a duration of 50.000 hours. With an average operation time of eight hours per day and five days per week (i.e. 220 working days per year) this corresponds to a life cycle of nearly 30 years.

 

Save energy costs

LED-lighting can also keep score with regard to energy consumption. The new luminaires do not only use less electricity than former technologies, they simultaneously offer a higher output. Hence, they are considerably more efficient: LED reach an average of 120 lumen per watt. That is why costs for illumination of your car workshop can be reduced tremendously.

 

Safe, protected light

Lighting for car workshops must be robust. Repair works and cars going in and out the workshop produce dirt and dust. Depending on the area of application moisture also comes along. Therefore, please draw your attention to the protection class IP. IP consists of two figures. The first figure indicates the degree of protection against foreign objects and contacts whereas the second figure relates to water protection.  Exclusively luminaires having a minimum protection class of IP54 should be installed in car workshops – otherwise electricity is exposed to danger.
